About
the Collection
The Local History Collection of the Redwood City Public Library was established
to provide patrons with research opportunities in areas of local interest
and to share Redwood City's colorful heritage with the community.
At the Local History Collection, you can...
- Learn more about the history of Redwood City
- Explore our large collection of photographs
- Trace your family history
- Search for past uses of land and property
The Collection covers all aspects of Redwood City's development, from
the 1850's to the present day, with particular emphases on businesses,
public schools, civic organizations, city agencies, and early family histories.
In addition to a large selection of primary-source materials and private
papers, there are oral histories, books, newspapers, pamphlets, tax assessment
rolls, maps, city directories, and over 5,500 photographs.
While the materials do not circulate, most items can be photocopied upon
request. Microfilm of local newspapers is also available for public use.
Contributions are encouraged. The Collection is expanded and maintained
largely through the efforts of the volunteers of the Archives Committee.
The Committee welcomes public participation in its many activities, as
well as donations of any printed or photographic historical material which
documents the history of Redwood City.
The Collection is located in the Karl A. Vollmayer Local History Room
on the mezzanine at the Redwood City Public Library, 1044 Middlefield
Road. An archivist is available to answer questions and to assist patrons
in the use of archival material.
